Proper leadership will bring order in uasin gishu hawkers menace

"The challenge of leadership is to be strong but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly."
Jim Rohn

Uasin Gishu County government should put forth measures that are sound and can be able to provide necessary leadership to the traders and hawkers. The buck stops at the door of the governors office. Quick glance about what lead us to be here.

Few weeks ago, county askaris was seen in a video widely shared online beating up businessmen and hawkers who were found out operating out of their jurisdictions simply because they had defied the order for their own reasons. The opinions in social media and in mainstream media differed sharply while section of nakuru County leadership calling out on  their colleagues in uasin gishu claiming that's tribal animosity as there is a deliberate targeting of members of certain community in the ongoing crackdown.

The uasin gishu County government in its latest move to decongest the town have designated three markets for hawkers and small scale businesses namely : Eldoret hawkers market, Kahoya market, Eldoret West market. This is a very smart move however, to be able to embrace the changes necessary frameworks should be put in place.

Traders should have an identification showing exactly where he/she is operating,  impose penalties on those who violate the rules and jurisdiction and fair handling of traders.

Measures should be friendly and conform strictly to human rights. The government should know that the traders contribute handsomely to the well-being of the county development agenda through payment of taxes and levies.

A trader who did not want to me named because of sensitivity of the matter claimed that " the county government have ill motives in evictions and mishandling of hawkers. The orders are coming from above." he added that "the hawkers are human beings who pay taxes and should be treated with dignity"

The sentiments prompted leaders from Nakuru to cry foul over motives of the move.  Governor Lee Kinyanjui(Jubilee) questioned his uasin gishu counterpart if members of certain ethnic group was being targeted a claim that was furiously denied by governor's office and many leaders from this region.

All said and done alot needs to be done in serving the citizens. Diligence and professionalism should headline everything. Sound mechanism and frameworks should be laid down to deal with any problems. Any form of harassment should be rebuked and discouraged. The laws should take its course. There is no difference from this brutality with mob lynching which Is despicable in this century. Public servants must be courteous at all time
