Farmers woes sign of inept leadership in North Rift

Since January farmers in North Rift, famously referred to as bread basket of Kenya have endured tumultuous period of anguish as a result of tedious maize delivery, scuttling efforts by cartels, delayed payments in national cereals and produce board (NCPB), inadequate fertilizers and so forth. The crisis was not expected and even our leaders were as clueless as farmers.
So who are the cartels? Who are these enemies of agricultural production that even our leaders who we hold with great regard have no idea about? It defeats logic that when we as farmers we are seeking for help from apparently our leader’s t themselves can’t get the root cause of our miseries. So who exactly should we turn to for solace?
Agriculture is of great importance not only to the North Rift region but to our country at large. Maize and wheat production are only viable in handful of counties in Kenya: uasin Gishu, Nandi, Trans-Nzoia and Narok. Due to soil and weather factors other regions can’t practice meaningful and adequate crop production. So with such glaring stat that points the enormity of farming in Kenya the government can still frustrate them? Farmers in fact should be highest paid people since they are the ones feeding the rest and engage themselves in tedious work of production. Our leader ought to have done something to mitigate the challenges farmers endure which are honestly unwarranted.
How can a farmer deliver his produce only to be turned away after spending g a lot of time in the queue? Or rather his payments delayed for whooping five months? This is great demotivation our famers go through and leaders should up their game. The challenges were sign of inefficiency from the government side since instead of tang the blame they start blaming cartels. Are so called faceless cartels powerful than government?
The national government and counties which had crisis should save their faces and report back to duty. These embarrassing and avoidable challenges should never see the light of the day. Leaders should lead and provide solutions and not engage in endless noise. From governors, MPs Mcas our farmers deserve better and motivation. They deserve cooperative societies and unions where they can air their voices. Reflect on what should be done to those elected you to office first before rushing on the next electioneering season. Our people are already empowered thanks to thriving agriculture in our region. We are lucky but we are being let down by our representatives.
Payments delay obviously jeopardizes production in the next season and that should be dealt with decisively without farther delays and aspersions. Countless scandals have eroded public trust in government and that should be reigned on. NCPB should be cleaned and cartels in silos rid of. The farmers database should be establish so that it can eliminate the cartels.
